Despite the heading, this is really about all of us. At some point in our lives, for short or long periods of time, we are disadvantaged by a culture that assumes nimble mobility and perfect senses. If you break a leg, are pregnant, are manoeuvring a buggy, are visually- or hearing-impaired, have heart or lung problems, need a stick and handrails to move around safely, use a wheelchair, have communication or reading difficulties – or many, many more issues – you will immediately come up against a whole range of barriers to an easy life. On Alston Moor, we’d like to do what we can. Our steep hills and cobbled streets are enough of a challenge – we don’t need to make it more difficult. Let’s do those simple things that make life easier for everyone. Next week, it could be you needing such provision.
