Name of group: 1st Alston (St Augustine) Guides
We are looking for volunteers to: Could you spare just 12 hours to do something for girls this year?  If so, you could take part in our 12 Hour Challenge.

Take on the challenge and become a volunteer!

Whether you can help every week, month or year we can find a role to suit you. With our 12 Hour Challenge, even the busiest person can enjoy the rewards of volunteering no matter what time and skills they can offer.

In just a day, you can make a real difference to girl’s lives.

You could help girls complete a badge by teaching the girls new skills such as pilates or gardening, collect the shopping for an activity, provide admin support, help with a one off event and much more – it’s entirely up to you.

We offer volunteers: Making a difference to girls' lives and helping them achieve their potential is hugely rewarding. But there are lots of benefits for you too.

• A role in Girlguiding UK can certainly give your CV a boost! As a volunteer, you could get involved with marketing, recruiting other volunteers, raising funds, handling budgets and managing large-scale events. In the process, you will develop a whole range of skills such as communication and organisational skills, teamwork and leadership.

You'll have lots of fun! The guiding programme is packed with activities and challenges, and you'll have a chance to experience them along with the girls.

Alston Moor Film
Name of group: Alston Moor Film
We are looking for volunteers to: Help set up and staff our monthly (+) film screenings in Alston and Garrigill Halls + distribute posters around the area.

We also try to take on film projects from time to time. These can involve crew, acting and being on either side of interviews, mostly voluntarily.
Volunteers need: Welcoming & technical skills + the ability to work to a group purpose. We encourage CRB checks.
All film, journalistic & theatrical skills can help in project work.

Thursday evenings, (last one of the month for screenings for adults- School holiday Thursdays for children’s shows). Setting up takes about 2 hours, screenings 2 and breaking down 1 hour- but, you don’t have to be around for 5 hours & watching the film’s usually a treat! Filmmaking takes ages and demands enormous patience and lots of time!
We offer volunteers: At screenings, we all pay for entry to the movies but making popcorn & washing up with friendly people can be pleasant!

We share filmmaking & associated skills as much as we can, along with access to equipment and software for approved projects.

We are looking for volunteers to: Work in our shop
Volunteers need: People skills, particularly younger people, and a flair for fashion; able to talk to people and put them at ease. Also need to be confident and trustworthy with cash handling.
Any restrictions: Must be over 16 years old

Preferably 3 hour shifts.

Either 10:00 – 1:00 or 1:00 – 4:00 one day per week or more if available

Litter Pick
Name of group: Alston Litter Pick
We are looking for volunteers to: Litter pick around Alston and surroundings. Litter pickers and bags provided, but bring own gloves. Usually no more than a couple of hours with refreshments afterwards.

Suggestions as to where to go and people to help with the litter pick.
Volunteers need: Everyone!! And one driver and trailer to go around afterwards and collect the bags
Any restrictions: Everyone is invited to help. Children need supervision

We are looking for volunteers to: Drive the bus for community groups- will need to complete ‘Midas’ course.

Keep the bus clean and well maintained

People to encourage community groups to form and organise trips ( to reduce social isolation)
Volunteers need: Driving licence + MIDAS for drivers

1st Alston Scout Group

Alston Moor 1st Scout Group
Name of group: 1st Alston Scout Group
We are looking for volunteers to: We need volunteer helpers for Cubs (age 8 – 10) and Scouts (age 10-14)

Helpers for camps and other visits are always appreciated.

We require a one on one carer for special needs children and we are also looking for people to help with fundraising events and behind the scenes work.
Volunteers need: No qualifications required, training will be given.

All volunteers will have to have a clean CRB (these checks are free of charge if you want to volunteer for any work with the Scout Association)
Any restrictions: Must be over 18 and be able to commit to helping on agreed nights (we are very flexible and it can be done on a rota basis)

Cubs – Friday 7pm – 8.30pm

We are looking for volunteers to: Litter pick

Cut/strim grass – machinery provided

General Maintenance – painting, weeding, edge paths etc.

Inspect equipment and bring defects to the attention of the Trustees.

Occasionally larger scale projects such as ground works
Volunteers need: All welcome to help in whatever way they feel they can
Any restrictions: Over 18 to operate machinery unless supervised

The site has 24 hour access every day of the year.

No minimum commitment – 10 minutes weeding does make a difference!
We offer volunteers: Fairhill has a strimmer, push mower and ride-on mower and would train people in the use of these.

We try to have regular work days where volunteers can work together and refreshments are provided.

Volunteers also have the freedom to work independently, as and when they wish.

Clothing such as a cap is provided so that people are recognised as volunteering for Fairhill.

We are looking for volunteers to: Help with choosing plays from a selection sent by Rural Highlights to show in Alston Town Hall. Also to put out posters and help out on the night.

Meeting in local pub twice yearly and afternoon/evening of shows. Promoter invited to Rural Highlights Promoters evening twice a year.

We are looking for volunteers to: Help in maintaining Greg’s Hut, on Cross Fell, as an open free-to-use mountain shelter, under the auspices of the Mountain Bothies Association, and in memory of John Gregory, killed in the Apls, 1968.
